How to Become a Morning Person

To a night owl the sheer idea of peppy, ready-to-take-on-the-world morning people is enough to induce a physical cringe. But let's face it, waking up in a non-groggy state allows us to be productive and to get stuff done! If you've ever enjoyed a sleep-in only to awake to the realization that half your day is already gone (and why couldn't you have just gotten up when the alarm went off?!) then these tips to coax yourself into waking up earlier, and making use of that extra time, are for you.

Rearrange your bedroom: No, don't worry, you don't have to call in the movers, we're only talking about rearranging one small item: your alarm clock. Try plugging it in to a different outlet in your room - one that makes your alarm unreachable from where you sleep. If you have to physically stand up and walk to turn off your alarm in the morning, you're telling your body it's time to start the day, and you're less likely to fall right back asleep. Bonus: if your alarm clock is your phone then by leaving it across the room at bed time you can't scroll through your feeds late in to the night (which is a real issue with getting a good night's sleep these days).

Keep a glass of water nearby: When you rise and shine each morning it's a good idea to re-hydrate your body (before any coffee). Topping up your supply of water is another signal to your body that you're ready to get moving, and thus you'll have a bit more energy. This resolves mild dehydration from the night before and since dehydration = fatigue, hydration = energy!

Have a dance party: Yes, we are aware that dance parties happen in the evening and not at 7:00 am. But the kind of dance party we're talking about only has one guest: you! When you wake up, instead of turning on the morning talk shows, put on the radio or a music channel. If you hear uplifting music while you go through your morning routine, you might even sing along or do a lil' shimmy. Ever heard of singing in the shower? If you have some tunes in the background will influence your mood from crabby to positive. By turning your I-can't-believe-I'm-awake-right-now kind of mood into a good mood, you're more likely to try the whole morning person thing again the next day.
